Understanding Renal Dialysis: Life-Saving Treatment for Kidney Failure

Renal dialysis is a critical medical procedure designed to support individuals whose kidneys are no longer able to function effectively. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood. When kidney function declines due to chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury, dialysis becomes essential to maintain the body’s chemical balance and overall health.

Types of Renal Dialysis

There are two primary forms of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis involves circulating the patient’s blood through a machine that filters out waste before returning it to the body. Treatments are typically performed several times a week at specialized dialysis centers and can last three to five hours per session.
